Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Highlights Economic Stability, Overseas Support, and UNGA Speech

Pakistan Welcomes Iran-Israel Ceasefire, Reaffirms Support for Regional Peace
NEW YORK, September 27, 2025 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s economy has started to stabilise at the micro level. He highlighted lower inflation, reduced interest rates, and praised overseas Pakistanis for their role in sending record remittances.
Economy Showing Signs of Stability
Speaking to the media after his UN General Assembly speech in New York, the prime minister recalled the tough situation just a few years ago. He said inflation was as high as 32%, while the policy rate stood at 22.5%.
“Now, in just one and a half years, inflation has dropped into single digits. The policy rate has also gone down to 11%. At the micro level, the economy is stable,” he explained.
Shehbaz praised overseas Pakistanis, calling them “great ambassadors.” He revealed that in the fiscal year 2024-25, they sent home $38.5 billion in remittances. “Their support has been crucial for Pakistan’s economic recovery,” he added.
Global Visits and Meetings
The PM said his recent foreign visits had strengthened Pakistan’s image. He called his reception in Saudi Arabia “unprecedented in the last 40 years.” He also shared details of his meeting with US President Donald Trump, describing it as “very encouraging.”
According to Shehbaz, Trump expressed readiness to invest in Pakistan’s IT, trade, and other sectors. The two leaders also discussed counter-terrorism, minerals, artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and tariff issues.
Pakistan’s Military Achievements
Shehbaz spoke about the May 6–10 conflict with India. He said Pakistan’s armed forces downed seven Indian planes and carried out successful strikes. He credited COAS Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for guiding the army.
“On May 10, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with him. Soon after, India requested a ceasefire. We had already won the war but accepted the ceasefire to avoid escalation,” he explained.
The PM said this victory changed India’s tone towards Pakistan. “Those who once avoided respect are now shaking hands warmly. This shows our strength,” he stated.
Talks with UN Secretary-General
Earlier, Shehbaz met UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He thanked him for supporting Pakistan’s flood relief work and urged the UN to step up on global challenges.
He also raised climate change, Kashmir, and the Indus Waters Treaty dispute with India. On Gaza, he called for an immediate ceasefire and fast delivery of aid. He stressed that Pakistan will continue supporting peace efforts as a member of the UN Security Council.
Guterres praised Pakistan’s role at the UN, noting the country’s practical contribution to peace and dialogue.
Address at the UN General Assembly
In his UNGA speech, Shehbaz said Pakistan wanted peace after defeating India in May. “We have won the war, now we want to win peace,” he declared. He added that Pakistan’s actions showed it would never tolerate aggression.
The PM said India tried to gain politics from the Pahalgam incident but rejected Pakistan’s offer for an independent probe. He said Pakistan’s response gave India a “bloody nose” and proved Islamabad’s warnings true.
London Visit After US Trip
After completing his US visit, Shehbaz left for London via Geneva. Sources said he would meet Nawaz Sharif and brief the PML-N leadership about his UN trip. He is expected to stay in London for three days.
