5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Quetta
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Balochistan, including the provincial capital Quetta, on Sunday evening, according to a statement from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The tremor was recorded at 6:29 PM, with its epicentre located approximately 65 kilometers west of Quetta at a depth of 25 kilometers. The coordinates of the epicentre were 30.19°N latitude and 66.33°E longitude, the PDMA confirmed.
Tremors were felt across Quetta and nearby districts, with the PDMA describing the quake as mild to moderate in intensity. So far, no casualties or property damage have been reported.
“The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) of PDMA Balochistan is in coordination with district disaster management authorities to assess the situation,” the statement added.
Residents in Quetta and surrounding areas reported brief but noticeable shaking, prompting some people to leave their homes as a safety measure. Authorities noted that monitoring teams remain on high alert and will continue to provide updates should any aftershocks or damage reports arise.
Balochistan is situated in a seismically active region and regularly experiences moderate to strong earthquakes. Earlier this year, on June 30, a 5.5-magnitude quake hit Musakhail district, injuring five people and damaging several mud homes. On June 15, a 3.2-magnitude tremor was recorded in Pasni and Karachi, further highlighting the province’s seismic vulnerability.
