France in Crisis as Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu Resigns After Just 27 Days

06 October, 2025 14:54

France is facing new political uncertainty after Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu resigned less than a month into the role, the Elysee Palace confirmed on Monday.

Lecornu, 39, a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron and former Armed Forces Minister, was appointed on September 9, 2025. He replaced François Bayrou, who was removed after losing a no-confidence vote. Lecornu’s resignation after just 27 days makes his term one of the shortest in modern French history.

Known as a pragmatic technocrat, Lecornu tried to unite France’s divided parliament without using Article 49.3, a legal shortcut that allows laws to pass without a vote. However, his efforts collapsed amid increasing criticism of Macron’s leadership and internal pressure from the ruling Renaissance party.

Now, President Macron must appoint his eighth prime minister since taking office in 2017, highlighting the growing instability of his second term. The Elysee says it is currently holding consultations to find a replacement.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders are calling for fresh legislative elections, warning that France is facing one of its worst political crises in years.
