Authorities Crack Down on Fake News Network After TLP Protest

14 October, 2025 15:35

The Government of Pakistan has announced strong action against fake news related to the recent TLP incident. Authorities have identified key members of a fake news network and will file cases against them under the Prevention of Cyber Crimes Act (PCCIA). The FIA Cyber Crime and special units are expected to make immediate arrests.

A dedicated Deep Fake Lab has been activated to conduct forensic analysis of fake videos and audios. Social media platforms have been issued notices to remove false content within 24 hours. Accounts that repeatedly violate rules may face permanent suspension. The public is also warned that sharing unverified videos or clips could lead to legal action.

The government is enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against hateful and false information targeting state institutions. Overseas networks involved in spreading misinformation are being traced, with strict actions under consideration through embassies. Investigations and legal steps against foreign individuals are also underway, including consultations on issuing Red Notices and international cooperation.

TV channels and bloggers have been instructed to verify information twice before broadcasting. Targeted operations will be conducted against misleading hashtags and troll accounts. Financial facilitators are also under scrutiny with transaction screenings started.

Additional penalties will be applied for spreading rumors during emergencies. Provincial focal persons have been appointed for quick response and counter-messaging. Citizens are encouraged to report fake news via the official helpline 1919, with their identities kept confidential.

This comprehensive plan shows Pakistan’s commitment to combating fake news and protecting national security.
