Punjab to Replaces Toll Slips with Digital System
The Punjab government has officially decided to digitize all toll plazas across the province, aiming to enhance transparency, efficiency, and public convenience in toll collection.
The initiative was approved during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where the transition from manual paper-based toll receipts to a fully digital system was greenlit.
According to officials, the project will introduce a “One App, One System” model at 38 toll plazas across Punjab, replicating the framework already operational on national motorways. The new system will enable digital payments, eliminating the need for cash transactions, and helping reduce traffic congestion while saving time for commuters.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the shift is part of the government’s broader plan to digitize public services, stating that “technology-based solutions will help curb corruption and improve accountability in revenue collection.”
In addition to the toll system overhaul, the meeting also reviewed multiple infrastructure and urban development projects. Five new road construction initiatives were approved under public-private partnerships, which the Chief Minister said would “reduce costs and speed up execution by involving private firms.”
Officials reported that Punjab has already saved Rs 40 billion through e-tendering, reinforcing the benefits of digital governance. The Chief Minister also ordered the installation of solar-powered streetlights on newly developed roads to support clean energy use and lower electricity bills.
Other city improvement projects were also approved, including the construction of a fountain and a children’s miniature train at the park near Lahore Railway Station, alongside upgraded roads and footpaths within a 3-kilometer radius to enhance accessibility and aesthetics.
Authorities briefed the Chief Minister on flood rehabilitation progress, noting that 54 major bridges, 142 small bridges, and 858 roads damaged by flooding have been fully restored, along with recovery efforts in Murree, Chakwal, and Sahiwal.
The digital toll system will be rolled out in phases, eventually bringing all toll operations under one integrated electronic platform and “eliminating the need for manual receipts” completely.
