KARACHI: Law enforcement authorities have exposed a grave food safety scandal in Karachi, where several hotels and restaurants were allegedly found serving meat from dead chickens to unsuspecting customers. The discovery emerged after police apprehended two suspects during a targeted operation near the Railway Crossing in Mosa Colony.

According to Gulberg police, the arrested men, identified as Anwar and Kamal, were allegedly engaged in purchasing chickens that had perished during transport and reselling them to eateries across various parts of the city, including F.B. Area and New Karachi. During the operation, approximately 80 kilograms of decomposed poultry meat were seized from their possession.

Investigators revealed that the duo had been running the illicit trade for several years, earning illicit profits by distributing unfit chicken meat to small-scale restaurants and food centers at reduced prices. The confiscated meat was immediately destroyed to prevent its circulation within the city’s food network.

The Sindh Food Authority has also initiated a separate inquiry to identify and trace the eateries that procured meat from the accused individuals. A formal case has been registered at Gulberg Police Station under relevant food safety and criminal laws.

Authorities have cautioned the public to exercise vigilance regarding their dining choices, stressing that consumption of such contaminated meat could result in severe health complications, including bacterial infections and food poisoning.

In a parallel crackdown in Sargodha, the Punjab Food Authority intercepted a vehicle carrying 1,200 kilograms of unhygienic meat intended for distribution to local hotels and restaurants. Officials confirmed that the confiscated meat was destroyed on-site, and legal proceedings were initiated against those implicated in the offense.
