Pakistan warns Afghanistan: Cease-fire stands only if borders remain peaceful
Khawaja Asif Criticizes Afghan Foreign Ministerβs Statement from India
Pakistanβs Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has sent a strong and clear message to the Afghan Taliban regarding the ongoing Pakistan-Afghanistan cease-fire. He said the truce will continue only if there is no cross-border attack or infiltration from Afghan soil.
While addressing the media, Khawaja Asif said the message to Kabul was simple and direct β no incursion will be accepted. He stated that the agreement was based on the understanding that Afghanistanβs territory will not be used against Pakistan.
He further added that Pakistanβs stance has been consistent. βWe made it clear that no facility should be provided to the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on their land,β the Defence Minister said.
Khawaja Asif said Pakistan had repeatedly raised the issue with the Afghan government, but they continued to deny the facts. βWe have said it many times, and obviously, they keep denying it,β he added.
He explained that Pakistan cannot tolerate any cross-border attacks and will take all necessary steps to defend its sovereignty.
The Defence Minister appreciated the efforts of Qatar and Turkiye for mediating between the two countries. He said both nations played an important role in bringing the parties to the negotiation table.
He revealed that the mediators pointed out the core issue β that the TTP is being given space and support from Afghan territory to carry out attacks inside Pakistan.
Khawaja Asif stated that Pakistan told the Afghan side that everything depends on one main clause: no attacks from their soil.
Clarifying the nature of the agreement, Khawaja Asif said there is no fixed time period for the cease-fire. βThere was no deadline mentioned for the truce. It will remain effective as long as it is not violated,β he explained.
He added that the truce could continue indefinitely if both sides respected the terms and avoided escalation.
The announcement came days after the Pakistan Armyβs powerful counter-response to Afghan border aggression. Following heavy clashes, the Taliban government requested a cease-fire, which Pakistan agreed to under strict conditions.
According to sources, the cease-fire aims to prevent further loss of life and open the way for peaceful dialogue between the two neighboring countries.
Khawaja Asif made it clear that Pakistanβs patience should not be taken as weakness. He said, βOur forces are fully capable of defending the borders. But we still prefer peace over conflict.β
He stressed that Pakistan wants good relations with Afghanistan, but it will not compromise on national security.
