Murad Ali Shah Announces Major Relief Package for Farmers
Karachi: Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister of Sindh, announced on Wednesday an additional Rs 55 billion relief package for the province’s small farmers.
Under this package, farmers will receive DAP and urea fertilizers per acre to reduce their input costs and boost production. He noted that due to rising expenses, some farmers were forced to sell their land, and the lack of fertilizer had led to reduced yields.
Holding a press conference in Karachi Murad Ali Shah further stated that the Sindh government is bringing good news for farmers and wants to provide them with more support and facilities. He confirmed that although the federal government fixed the wheat support price at Rs 3,500 per 40kg without consulting the provinces, Sindh has accepted it in the interest of the farmers.
Murad Ali Shah emphasized that wheat production decreases when farmers are not properly supported. He added that if the Sindh government had not purchased wheat earlier, the country would now be discussing wheat imports.
The Chief Minister also addressed tax issues. He said that the agricultural income tax will remain at the previous 15% rate and that the implementation of a triple tax system on agricultural income has been postponed. Only those earning income will be taxed, and the aim is to avoid burdening poor farmers while ensuring fairness in the system.
In a separate announcement, Murad Ali Shah said that the Sindh government plans to distribute free scooters to women as part of its initiative to support female empowerment and improve mobility.
Shah additionally shared that he had discussed wheat pricing with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and that federal authorities had considered Bilawal Bhutto’s suggestions to provide relief to farmers. However, he noted that the federal government cited IMF conditions as a reason for not increasing the wheat support price beyond Rs 3,500.
Murad Ali Shah also clarified that there will be no restrictions on the movement of wheat within the country, and due to the current stock, there is no need to import wheat at this time.
