Islamabad SP Adeel Akbar’s Death: Govt Forms High-Level Inquiry to Probe Alleged Suicide
Who is SP Adeel Akbar? Islamabad Police Officer Dies by Suicide Near Serena Checkpoint
The federal government has set up a high-level investigation team to probe the alleged suicide of Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar, who died from a gunshot wound in his vehicle near a hotel in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
According to reports, the tragic incident took place around 4:30 PM near a bridge in the Industrial Area zone, where SP Akbar served as the zonal police head. He reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the head inside his car.
The weapon used in the incident was recovered, and forensic experts have examined ballistic evidence to verify the sequence of events.
Government Announces High-Level Investigation
Speaking to the media at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed that a three-member inquiry committee has been formed under the supervision of IGP Islamabad.
“A high-level investigation team has been constituted after consultation with the interior minister,” said Talal Chaudhry.
The committee includes:
-
DIG Headquarters
-
DIG Islamabad
-
DIG Security
Authorities have also begun examining Safe City footage, which, according to officials, shows no evidence of an external attack.
“Everything appears to have occurred inside the vehicle,” the IG Islamabad told reporters, calling the incident “deeply tragic for the entire police force.”
Investigation and Initial Findings
Preliminary reports suggest that SP Adeel Akbar allegedly took a firearm from his official gunman and shot himself in the head. He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to PIMS Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Officials are also attempting to unlock his mobile phone to analyze recent communications and activity. His colleagues, driver, and staff members who were present at the time are being questioned.
The motive behind the apparent suicide remains unknown, and investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.
A Loss That Shocked the Police Community
SP Adeel Akbar’s death has left the entire police department in shock. Described as a dedicated and respected officer, Akbar had recently been transferred from Balochistan to Islamabad.
A native of Gujrat District, he was a distinguished member of the 46th Common of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) and had earned recognition as one of the top performers of his CSS batch.
He is survived by his one-year-old daughter.
The tragic loss of such a promising officer has sparked widespread grief among colleagues and raised serious questions about the pressures faced by law enforcement personnel.
