Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Sunday reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the province’s security by strengthening the police force and equipping them with modern tools and technologies. Addressing a rally in Karak district, Afridi emphasized the importance of boosting counter-terrorism efforts to restore peace across KP.
Afridi’s statement follows his earlier criticism of the federal government’s policies, which he believes have contributed to the resurgence of terrorism in the province. “We are investing in efforts to increase our police capacity and provide them with modern equipment,” Afridi said, highlighting the government’s dedication to securing the region in line with former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision for the province.
The CM revealed plans to invest in a new special branch aimed at improving intelligence operations in KP. “This special branch will enhance our capacity to prevent terrorism and improve overall security,” Afridi added.
As part of the efforts to modernize the police force, the KP government has already procured 40 out of 70 bulletproof cars for law enforcement use. The CM’s office confirmed that the vehicles are part of a Rs1.89 billion initiative to bolster police mobility and security. Additionally, Afridi signed a summary for the purchase of several other vehicles, including armoured personnel carriers and various types of pick-ups, to further support law enforcement operations.
In his speech, Afridi also took aim at the federal government, accusing it of neglecting KP’s needs and failing to fulfil promises made to the province. He expressed frustration over the delayed distribution of the promised Rs100 billion for the merger of former FATA districts into KP, a commitment that, according to Afridi, has not been honored. He also voiced dissatisfaction with the federal government’s delay in convening the National Finance Commission (NFC) meeting to address KP’s financial concerns following the merger.
Afridi further alleged that the federal government was attempting to create a narrative against him due to his background in middle-class and tribal areas. “Top ministers have made accusations against me, but I remain a loyal soldier of Imran Khan,” he asserted, insisting that he had never retaliated with any harsh words.
On the issue of KP’s natural resources, Afridi emphasized the province’s right to control its resources. “Only the people of KP have the right to decide where their resources should go,” he stated, reiterating his support for the region’s autonomy in managing its wealth.
Afridi’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions with the federal government, as KP seeks greater financial and political autonomy following the merger of FATA. His administration continues to push for increased resources and policy changes to ensure the province’s stability and development.
