PTA warns public about free SIM card scam in Pakistan
If you’ve ever seen roadside stalls in Pakistan offering free SIM cards or giving free tech accessories for registration, be careful. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning about a new scam designed to steal people’s biometric data, including thumb impressions and fingerprints.
According to the PTA, fraudsters are tricking people—especially women—by pretending to offer free SIM cards or fake financial aid schemes. In reality, they collect biometric data and use it for criminal activities such as financial scams and identity theft.
The authority also reminded citizens that handing over or selling a SIM card registered under your name is a crime. People are urged to stay alert and avoid sharing personal or biometric information with unverified individuals or vendors.
Awareness Campaign “Is This Legit?”
In a positive step, Meta (the parent company of Facebook) has joined hands with the PTA and educational platform EYEYAH! to launch a public awareness campaign called “Is This Legit?”. The campaign aims to educate Pakistanis about online scams, fake offers, and fraudulent activities.
This initiative is part of Meta’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) digital safety program, which covers over 15 countries to promote digital awareness and security.
PTA Chairman highlighted that raising awareness is key to protecting users from the fast-changing tricks used by online scammers.
Meanwhile, Dania Mukhtar, Head of Public Policy at Meta Pakistan, said that while Meta continues to take action against scammers, these fraudsters keep changing tactics, targeting people through multiple apps and websites.
The PTA urged everyone to stay cautious, verify information before sharing data, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
