Pakistan Launches PakSat-MM1: Nation’s Own High-Speed Satellite Internet Service
After months of anticipation following the global popularity of Elon Musk’s Starlink, Pakistan has officially launched its own high-speed internet and commercial satellite service, PakSat-MM1.
The service was inaugurated by Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to become a digitally connected and economically empowered nation.
The launch of PakSat-MM1 comes as Pakistan prepares to send its first astronaut into space in 2026, a pivotal step in the country’s scientific and technological advancement.
At the inauguration event, Minister Iqbal highlighted the importance of mastering space technology for national progress. Reflecting on scientific aspects of Islamic teachings, he stated that the Holy Quran encourages exploration and utilization of the universe, while expressing regret that Pakistan has historically focused more on building mosques than on technological development.
He added that the PakSat-MM1 service supports the “Uraan Pakistan” vision, which aims to achieve technological self-reliance and innovation.
Over the past two years, Pakistan has successfully launched four satellites, enabling the country to offer its own high-speed internet service. “We are laying the foundation of a connected Pakistan” through a combination of fibre optics, 5G, and commercial satellites, the minister said.
The government’s E-Pakistan initiative seeks to connect youth nationwide to global opportunities, with the first priority being broadband connectivity for every school and health centre.
The debut of PakSat-MM1 underscores Pakistan’s commitment to delivering high-speed internet access to all citizens, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
