PTI’s Khurram Zeeshan wins Senate seat in KP Assembly
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Khurram Zeeshan has won the Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, defeating opposition candidate Taj Muhammad Afridi, according to unofficial results announced on Thursday.
The seat became vacant after PTI leader Shibli Faraz, who was the former opposition leader in the Senate, was disqualified following his conviction in the May 9, 2023 riot cases. To win the seat, a candidate needed at least 75 votes.
In the election, Zeeshan received 91 votes out of 137 cast by KP lawmakers, while Afridi got 45 votes. After the result, Zeeshan expressed his gratitude in a Facebook post, saying, “Thank God.”
Although there were three candidates in total, the main contest was between Zeeshan and Afridi. Irfan Saleem, another PTI-backed candidate, was listed as the covering candidate for Zeeshan.
Out of the 145-member KP Assembly, four members of the Awami National Party (ANP) chose not to vote. KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also took part in the polling and publicly expressed his support for Zeeshan on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Zeeshan’s win further strengthens PTI’s position in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
