Weekly Inflation Hits 5%, Yet Food Prices Keep Climbing: What’s the Reason?

31 October, 2025 14:56

The weekly inflation rate has been reported at 5 percent, yet the surge in food prices continues to impact the public, highlighting the need for measures to shield citizens from inflationary pressures.

Prominent economist Muzzammil Aslam has noted that while the overall weekly inflation stands at 5 percent, the rate of increase in essential food items experienced by the common man varies significantly.

In a recent statement, Aslam detailed that the price of tomatoes surged by 31 percent, onions rose by 20 percent, flour increased by 19 percent, beef went up by 13 percent, and ghee saw a 12 percent hike.

He further added that garlic and chickpeas each recorded a 30 percent increase, potatoes climbed by 20 percent, chicken rose by 15 percent, whereas electricity prices decreased by 26 percent.

Aslam emphasized that economic indicators present mixed signals regarding inflation trends and stressed the need for clarity for the public on whether their purchasing power has improved or declined over the past year.
