President Zardari to Represent Pakistan at Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha

02 November, 2025 18:48

President Asif Ali Zardari will attend the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar, from November 4-6, which is being held under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly. The summit will bring together global leaders and policymakers to discuss key issues related to social development, with a focus on promoting decent work, expanding employment opportunities, and strengthening inclusive safety nets for vulnerable populations.

According to the President’s Secretariat, during the summit, President Zardari will engage in high-level discussions with international leaders, including the leadership of Qatar and heads of major multilateral forums such as the United Nations. These meetings aim to strengthen international cooperation on social development issues.

“On the sidelines, the president will hold important meetings with global and regional leaders, including the leadership of Qatar, as well as heads of major multilateral forums such as the United Nations and other international organisations,” the statement noted.

The President is expected to highlight Pakistan’s commitment to inclusive growth and social protection, with a particular emphasis on the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). This program has been central to Pakistan’s efforts to reduce poverty and enhance resilience among marginalized groups. In addition, President Zardari will promote Pakistan’s readiness to pilot a Social Protection and Jobs Compact (2026–28) aligned with the goals of the Doha Summit. This initiative aims to expand coverage to informal workers, persons with disabilities, and children, while also promoting decent work and green employment opportunities.

The proposed compact aligns with the Doha Political Declaration and global commitments regarding social protection and financing for sustainable development. Furthermore, President Zardari will underscore Pakistan’s efforts to collaborate with development partners and multilateral institutions to secure funding for social protection and green employment. This includes initiatives such as the SDG Stimulus, debt-for-social swaps, and South-South cooperation through China’s Global Development Initiative.

The President will also reaffirm Pakistan’s dedication to turning the outcomes of the Doha Summit into tangible actions that will strengthen social protection systems and support sustainable, inclusive economic growth across the nation.
