Sugar Prices Reach Record High in Pakistan

02 November, 2025 19:39

Sugar prices in Pakistan have reached a new all-time high, hitting Rs220 per kilogram in major cities, putting additional financial strain on consumers despite government efforts to stabilize costs. The surge in prices has been particularly noticeable over the past week, with significant increases reported in various regions.

According to the Bureau of Statistics, the price of sugar per kilogram rose by Rs23 in Sargodha within a week, while Karachi and Hyderabad saw increases of Rs5. The maximum price in these cities has now reached Rs220 per kilogram, marking a record high. Meanwhile, in cities like Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Sargodha, the price of sugar has surged to Rs200 per kilogram. In Hyderabad, the price has gone up from Rs190 to Rs195 per kilogram.

However, the Bureau of Statistics also noted a slight decrease in the national average price, which fell by 12 paisas over the last week, bringing the average cost of sugar to Rs188.69 per kilogram. This is a small decline from last week’s average of Rs188.81, but still a considerable increase from last year’s average of Rs132.47 per kilogram.

Market sources have also reported sharp price hikes in Lahore, where sugar is now being sold for Rs200 to Rs220 per kilogram. The rising sugar prices are contributing to growing concerns over inflation, as basic commodities continue to become more expensive across the country.

Despite the measures being taken by the government, it appears that the situation remains challenging for consumers, with no immediate relief in sight.
