18th Amendment Needs Balance in Federal-Provincial Resources: Rana Sanaullah

04 November, 2025 10:28

Islamabad: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that there is a need to create balance in the distribution of resources between the federal government and provinces under the 18th Constitutional Amendment to ensure financial stability at all levels.

Speaking on a private TV show, Rana Sanaullah said that while the Constitution is a respected document, making amendments to improve it is part of a democratic process.

He noted that 26 amendments have already been made to Pakistan’s Constitution, and further changes are possible if two-thirds of Parliament agrees.

Rana Sanaullah clarified that the PML-N has no disagreement with the 18th Amendment, but if practical challenges or imbalances in resource distribution have emerged, they can be reviewed through national consensus.

He dismissed the idea that the government is preparing an immediate “27th Amendment,” saying that this is part of a continuous political and constitutional dialogue that naturally occurs in a democracy.

The adviser added that although the resource-sharing formula was discussed extensively in the past, changing realities now make it necessary to hold serious discussions once again. If consensus is achieved, he said, Parliament can approve appropriate changes with a two-thirds majority.
