Civil Servants Must Choose Between Dual Citizenship or Job: 27th Amendment
Civil Servants Must Choose Between Dual Citizenship or Job: 27th Amendment
The federal government has proposed introducing a new article through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, making it mandatory for civil servants to choose either dual citizenship or government employment — not both.
According to sources, the proposal states that if a public office holder cannot hold dual nationality, then civil servants should not be allowed to do so either. The government has referred to Article 63(1)(c) of the Constitution, which already disqualifies members of Parliament from holding dual citizenship.
Sources said that under this new clause, government employees with dual nationality will face stricter rules.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) is currently reviewing the proposed amendment. Most CEC members reportedly support the amendment, sources added.
The government is also planning other constitutional changes under the 27th Amendment, including:
- An amendment to Article 243 to officially include and recognize the Field Marshal rank for the Army Chief.
- The formation of constitutional courts to handle constitutional matters.
- Distribution of executive magistracy powers at the district level.
- Consideration of a unified national curriculum across Pakistan.
The 27th Amendment Bill is expected to be approved next week.
