Pakistan, Bangladesh Start Direct Shipping Sercvie to Boost Trade
In a major step to improve regional trade, Pakistan and Bangladesh have started a direct shipping service between Karachi and Chittagong. The new route will make trade faster and more efficient.
According to Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the new service has cut delivery times for goods from 23 days to just 10 days, helping businesses save both time and money. Dar shared the update in a written reply to the National Assembly, highlighting the government’s progress in trade and economic cooperation.
Bangladesh Eases Trade Rules for Pakistan
In another positive move, Bangladesh has ended the 100% inspection rule for Pakistani exports at its ports. The new rule took effect on September 29, 2024.
Dar called this decision a “breakthrough in bilateral trade facilitation”, saying it will build trust between the two countries and make Pakistani goods more competitive by reducing customs delays.
Stronger Trade Relations
Dar also mentioned that the 9th Joint Economic Session (JEC) was held in Dhaka on October 27, where both sides discussed ways to expand trade, investment, and connectivity.
As part of a deal signed in January 2025, Pakistan has already exported 50,000 metric tons of rice to Bangladesh out of a 200,000 metric ton agreement. More rice shipments are planned in the coming months.
Over 200 Pakistani companies also took part in the Dhaka International Trade Fair and the Bangladesh Denim Expo, showing Pakistan’s growing presence in Bangladesh’s textile and manufacturing markets.
Plans for Direct Flights
To further improve connectivity, Pakistan and Bangladesh are now working on starting direct air flights between the two countries.
Dar confirmed that two Pakistani private airlines have received permission from Bangladesh to operate on the Pakistan–Bangladesh route. The flight schedules will be finalized soon and are expected to boost business and tourism between the two nations.
