Punjab plans major increase in traffic fines up to Rs20,000

07 November, 2025 17:50

The Punjab cabinet has approved major changes to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, increasing fines for traffic violations up to Rs20,000. The decision follows a similar move earlier by Sindh.

After cabinet approval, the summary containing 20 key amendments has been sent to the Punjab Assembly for final approval.

New Fine Structure

Under the new proposal, existing fines ranging from Rs200 to Rs1,000 will now be increased to Rs2,000 to Rs20,000 depending on the violation.

Proposed fines for overspeeding:

  • Motorcycles: Rs2,000

  • Cars up to 2000cc: Rs5,000

  • Cars above 2000cc: Rs20,000

  • Commercial and public transport vehicles: Rs15,000

Other proposed penalties:

  • Traffic signal violations: Rs2,000 to Rs15,000

  • Lane or zebra crossing violations: Rs10,000

  • Using a mobile phone while driving: Rs2,000 to Rs15,000

  • Allowing underage individuals to drive: Legal action

Safety and Regulation Updates

The new law makes it mandatory for front-seat passengers to wear seatbelts and proposes action against unauthorized vehicle modifications.

Digital challans and computerized driving licences will also get legal recognition, while both riders on motorcycles must wear helmets.

Point-Based System

A new point-based violation system will also be introduced. Drivers will lose 2 to 4 points for each offence, and once 20 points are accumulated, their driving licence will be suspended or canceled.

The government hopes these changes will promote safer driving habits and reduce road accidents across Punjab.
