10 November, 2025 15:55

ISLAMABAD: Before the official approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, Senator Faisal Vawda arrived at Parliament House carrying a basket of sweets, celebrating the expected passage of the bill.

Vawda shared sweets with journalists outside Parliament in a lighthearted gesture, saying, “I came to eat sweets in advance; I won’t go hungry because of the job.”

He added that the government is focused on strengthening Pakistan’s defense and hinted at further reforms, saying, “Enjoy the sweetness of the 27th Amendment and prepare for the 28th.”

The unusual celebration drew attention from lawmakers and reporters, symbolizing confidence in the amendment’s approval.

Government Denies Deadlock Over 27th Amendment

Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said there is no deadlock regarding the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Speaking to media at Parliament House, he said the Constitution of Pakistan is a living document that must evolve with time to meet the country’s needs.

Tarar explained that Parliament is holding detailed discussions on the amendment, which aims to improve governance, enhance coordination between federal and provincial governments, and strengthen national defense.

He said the draft was prepared after studying international best practices, and praised the Prime Minister’s decision to remove the proposed immunity clause, calling it a step toward transparency and accountability.

Tarar also clarified that granting immunity to the President is a global norm, ensuring stability while maintaining accountability under the law.

Constitutional Courts to Improve Judicial Efficiency

The minister noted that the idea of Constitutional Courts has been debated since the Charter of Democracy and is supported by major political parties, including PML-N, PPP, and ANP.

He said the proposal is now at an advanced stage and will help reduce the judiciary’s workload and speed up legal decisions, following the success of the Constitutional Bench introduced under the 26th Amendment.

According to Tarar, these reforms will make the judicial system more efficient, benefit citizens, and increase public trust in the justice system.
