Israel Killed 44 of 270 Journalists in Gaza Tents: Report

Gaza: At least 44 Palestinian journalists have been killed inside displacement tents in the Gaza Strip, out of more than 270 media workers killed by Israeli occupation forces since October 2023, according to a new report by the Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.

The report revealed that many journalists were sheltering near hospitals and UN-run facilities when Israeli forces launched airstrikes or sniper attacks targeting the tents. It accused Israel of conducting a systematic campaign against Gaza’s media community by destroying news offices and killing journalists in their homes, workplaces, and shelters.

The Syndicate said that targeting journalists is a war crime under Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions, which protects media workers as civilians. It added that attacks on tents near hospitals and schools violate international protections for humanitarian zones.

The Syndicate called for the creation of an independent international commission to investigate the killings and urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take action for accountability. It also appealed to UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to help establish safe corridors and protected areas for displaced reporters in Gaza.

In August 2025, six journalists — including Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif — were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent for reporters outside Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, sparking global condemnation.

Press freedom groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF), have confirmed that the Gaza conflict has become the deadliest war for journalists in modern history, raising serious concerns over systematic violations of international humanitarian law.
