Rawalpindi took a major step toward sustainable urban transport on Wednesday by launching its first electric bus system, introducing 45 eco-friendly buses across four major city routes. The inauguration, expected to be led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, marks a pivotal move in modernizing the city’s public transportation network.
The project is part of Punjab’s broader initiative to promote cleaner transit solutions amid rising traffic congestion and deteriorating air quality. Officials shared that preparations for the launch were extensive, including security arrangements, installation of a large canopy at the Old Waran Depot, and fully energized charging stations at both the Old Waran Bus Terminal in Saddar and the Green Bus Terminal at Chohar Chowk.
The newly launched routes connect high-density areas such as Raja Bazaar to Koral Chowk, Saddar to Adiala Road and Munawar Colony, Saddar to Qabristan Chowk, and Marrir Chowk to 26 Number Chungi.
“Rawalpindi is stepping into a cleaner, quieter future with a system designed to serve thousands daily,” said an official involved in the project, emphasizing that the electric buses will reduce fuel dependence and curb emissions.
The chief minister is scheduled to receive a detailed briefing on ongoing development projects and is expected to visit the Kacheri Chowk construction site after the inauguration. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb may preside over the inauguration if required, while Maryam Nawaz is anticipated to arrive between 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm.
The electric bus initiative aims to provide residents with more reliable and environmentally friendly transport, positioning Rawalpindi as a model for sustainable urban mobility in Punjab.
