KMC Blames BRT Construction and Store Management for Open Manhole Incident
KMC has held BRT construction and the management of a private store responsible for the incident involving a child who died after falling into an open manhole near the Nipa Flyover.
KMC has sent an investigation report to the Secretary of the Local Government Department regarding the incident of a child falling into a sewer in front of a private store near the Nipa Flyover in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town.
enior Director of Municipal Services Imran Rajput wrote in his report that on the orders of the Mayor of Karachi, Municipal Services launched a search operation for the child. The child’s body was recovered from the Link Nallah in Gulshan Town.
The report states that the inspection proved that the cause of the accident was the BRT construction. The excavation for the BRT project caused severe damage to the entire drainage system of the drain. An attempt was made to close the drains by installing temporary two-foot covers.
The KMC investigation report states that the tragedy occurred due to the Red Line project leaving a manhole open at one location. This procedure and substandard covers were never used by KMC.
The report states that BRT did not inform KMC before starting the work, BRT did the excavation and later ignored the situation, the child fell into the sewer due to the private store management and BRT, all the excavated sections have been filled under the supervision of officers.
