Fire breaks out at Landhi Export Zone garment factory
A major fire has broken out at a garment factory in the Lamdhi Export Processing Zone. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the building as firefighters and emergency teams rushed to control the blaze.
So far, no casualties have been officially reported. However, the incident highlights the ongoing safety risks faced by workers in Pakistan’s garment industry.
This fire is not an isolated event. Earlier in August 2025, a similar fire at another factory in the same area caused eight injuries and the collapse of part of the building. Many past incidents have been linked to poorly maintained or non-functional fire safety systems.
According to a 2023 study by the International Labour Organization (ILO), over 70% of garment factories in Pakistan lack proper fire exits. Combined with flammable materials and weak safety measures, this creates a high risk for workers during emergencies.
Authorities are currently focusing on controlling the fire and ensuring all employees are safe. An investigation will follow to determine the cause of the blaze.
This fire underscores the urgent need for stronger safety regulations and better working conditions in Pakistan’s garment sector.
