IMF Approves $1.2 Billion Disbursement for Pakistan
Following a successful evaluation, the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Executive Board on Monday authorized the distribution of $1.2 billion for Pakistan under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
The IMF Executive Board met in Washington and made the decision on Monday.
Even after the disastrous floods, the board claims that Pakistan’s strong implementation of its program has maintained stability and improved funding and external indicators.
The International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board finished both the first and second reviews of Pakistan’s economic reform program, which was backed by the RSF and the EFF, respectively. According to an IMF statement, this decision permits an immediate transfer of approximately US$1 billion (SDR 760 million) under the EFF and approximately US$200 million (SDR 154 million) under the RSF, bringing the total disbursements under the two arrangements to approximately $3.3 billion (SDR 2,434 billion).
Reforms in the energy industry are crucial for preserving its long-term viability and boosting Pakistan’s competitiveness, according to Mr. Nigel Clarke, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair.
While emphasizing that the next stage of reforms must concentrate on sustainably reducing electricity generation and distribution costs and addressing inefficiencies across the power and gas sectors, he added that prompt power-tariff adjustments have helped curb both the accumulation and flow of circular debt.
