Based on an official announcement made public on Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari has formally accepted the calendar for the next Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, which will take place on January 24, 2026.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission will publish a comprehensive election timetable, including dates for each constituency, deadlines for nominations, and campaign guidelines for political parties and candidates after the president gives his assent.

In order to ensure transparency and a seamless electoral process throughout all 24 constituencies in the region, Chief Election Commissioner Abid Ali said that the commission will shortly organize an all-parties conference to consult political stakeholders.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan’s term came to an end, and his government was formally disbanded on November 24 when the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly was dissolved following its five-year term.

Former Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court judge Justice (retd) Yar Muhammad Nasir has been sworn in as the acting chief minister to supervise the government and ensure free and fair elections.

Khalid Khurshid was elected chief minister after the PTI won a majority in the most recent elections, which took place in November 2020. But Khurshid was disqualified by a court decision in 2023, which resulted in a coalition administration led by Gulbar Khan.
