Double-Decker Buses Arrive in Karachi, Marking Major Upgrade to Public Transport

15 December, 2025 14:58

Karachi’s public transport network is poised for a significant transformation with the arrival of a new fleet of double-decker buses at the city’s port, signaling a major step forward in urban mobility.

The development was confirmed by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, who announced that the long-awaited buses have reached Karachi and will soon be introduced for public use.

Sharing the update through his social media platforms, Minister Memon said the iconic double-decker buses, previously promised as part of the government’s transport initiatives, are now ready for deployment under the Sindh government’s transport department.

“Double-decker buses for #Karachi reached the port. Inshallah Soon these buses will be on roads for the people of Karachi by the transport department government of Sindh.”

The buses are being introduced as part of the Sindh government’s broader plan to modernize public transport and strengthen the People’s Bus Service (PBS) network. Designed to carry more passengers while offering improved comfort, the double-deckers are expected to provide a high-capacity and visually appealing addition to Karachi’s bus fleet.

Officials indicate that the buses may operate on major commuter routes and could also be used on selected corridors aimed at promoting local tourism within the city.

The arrival of the double-decker buses aligns with other recent transport initiatives by the Sindh Transport Department, including the expansion of electric bus services and the launch of the Pink Scooties program to support women’s independent mobility.

While authorities have yet to announce the official launch date and final routes, preparations are currently underway. These include operational planning, driver training, and the readiness of depot facilities to ensure the smooth integration of the new buses into Karachi’s heavily trafficked road network.

The initiative is expected to offer residents more affordable, comfortable, and efficient travel options, reflecting renewed efforts to address long-standing challenges in Karachi’s public transportation system.
