Further details have emerged regarding the passing of Dr Shamshad Akhtar, confirming that the former State Bank of Pakistan governor and ex-caretaker finance minister died following a cardiac arrest.
According to reports, Dr Akhtar remained professionally active until her final days. She was serving as the chairperson of the Pakistan Stock Exchange and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and had reportedly attended official duties at the Stock Exchange as recently as Friday.
Her funeral prayers are scheduled to be offered on Sunday after Zuhr, according to family sources.
Dr Akhtar was widely regarded as a distinguished economist, diplomat, and central banker, with a career spanning several decades. She held multiple senior positions at national and international institutions, earning respect for her expertise in economic policy and financial governance.
In recognition of her exceptional public service, she was awarded the Nishan-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian honour, in March 2024. Her passing marks a significant loss for Pakistan’s financial and policy-making community.
