Indian Journalists Face Rising Violence Under Modi Government

02 January, 2026 10:26

The lives of Indian journalists are increasingly at risk under the authoritarian leadership of the Modi administration.

Despite India’s claims of being a democracy, freedom of expression remains heavily restricted as the government entangles the press in a complex web of repression.

Reports indicate that murders, arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances of journalists have persisted under the current regime.

The Indian news outlet The Wire has documented these oppressive tactics, reporting that more than 14,800 journalists were targeted with violence in 2025.

According to their findings, eight journalists and social media influencers were killed in violent incidents, while 117 individuals were arrested.

The state of Gujarat recorded the highest number of violations against freedom of expression, with 108 documented incidents.

Furthermore, in an effort to stifle criticism of government policies, orders were issued to close more than 8,000 accounts on the social media platform X.
