Pakistan May Not Need IMF After Six Months as Defence Orders Rise: Khawaja Asif

07 January, 2026 09:34

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated on Tuesday that Pakistan may not need financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) within the next six months, citing a surge in defence procurement orders following the May 2025 conflict with India. The minister made these remarks during an appearance on the Geo News programme Capital Talk, highlighting Pakistan’s military resolve and global recognition after the confrontation.

Asif said, “Our aircraft have been tested, and we are receiving so many orders that Pakistan may not need the IMF in six months.” He added that the world witnessed Pakistan’s military capabilities during the 87‑hour Indo‑Pakistan conflict, which he claimed significantly damaged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s credibility domestically and internationally. According to Asif, India sought support from both the United States and China during the conflict, but Pakistan delivered a strong response.

The May 2025 clash erupted after India allegedly launched an unprovoked attack following a deadly assault on tourists in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). New Delhi has asserted that Pakistani nationals were involved in the incident, a claim Islamabad rejects, urging a neutral investigation. During the conflict, Pakistan reportedly shot down six Indian jets, including three Rafale aircraft, and several drones, before both sides agreed to a ceasefire on May 10 brokered by the United States.

Asif also drew a contrast between Pakistan and Venezuela, noting that the South American nation lacks significant military capability, whereas Pakistan’s armed forces have earned global respect. He expressed concerns about the reliability of the Afghan Taliban and the Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP), alleging links between these groups and India. On international issues, he questioned U.S. alignment with Israeli policies and labelled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “most wanted criminal” and “worst perpetrator against humanity,” urging action if the United States truly upholds human rights.
