Karachi Decides to End Water Supply Through Tankers, Hydrants
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has decided to end water supply through tankers and hydrants within the city.
In pursuit of this goal, Mayor of Karachi Murtaza Wahab has issued instructions to top officials of the Water Corporation to introduce an alternative distribution system. The Mayor stated that all seven hydrants currently installed in the city should be phased out to ensure that water is provided directly to citizens’ doorsteps through pipelines.
Mayor Wahab noted that while water hydrants generate approximately Rs 300 million in monthly revenue, their contracts expired last year, and no new contracts will be issued. He clarified that liberating citizens from the “tanker mafia” is a top priority for the administration. To address the city’s water shortage during this transition, water will be supplied to different areas on alternate days. The mayor emphasized that water supply through tankers is not a permanent solution and that the current system is causing severe hardship for the residents.
In addition to water reforms, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has decided to implement large-scale financial reforms. A delegation from the FABS Directorate and the Controller General of Accounts recently met with the Mayor to provide a detailed briefing on financial and administrative matters, marking a significant step toward modernizing the municipality’s fiscal management.
