NDMA Issues Severe Weather Alert as Westerly Wave Enters Pakistan
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a severe weather alert for the northern and upper regions of the country. According to the authority, a strong westerly wave is expected to enter Pakistan between January 16 and 22, likely bringing heavy rain and snowfall to several areas.
The NDMA stated that Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir will be the most affected regions. Moderate to heavy snowfall is anticipated in Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Astore, Chitral, Dir, Malam Jabba, and Swat. Snowfall is also predicted for Battagram, Naran, Kaghan, Galiyat, and Murree, which will further intensify the cold.
In response to the forecast, the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority has issued an emergency alert. While rain is expected in the plains, the upper reaches are likely to see significant snowfall, and the public has been directed to take all necessary precautions.
The Meteorological Department further predicts that the westerly system will enter Punjab between January 16 and 19. Rain and snowfall are expected in Murree and Galiyat from January 20 to 23, while rain is also likely in Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Sahiwal, and Multan. Similar conditions are forecast for the Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur divisions.
Additionally, rain and snowfall may occur in many areas of Balochistan from January 21 to 23, with rain expected in parts of Sindh on January 22 and 23. The NDMA has warned that heavy precipitation could cause landslides and road closures in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow the instructions of local administrations.
