British PM Starmer Shows Resistance to Trump’s Tariff Against Allies

19 January, 2026 17:36

Following US President Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs to secure Greenland, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on Monday that peaceful dialogue among allies was required and that a trade war was not in anyone’s best interests.

At an impromptu press conference on Monday, Starmer stated that the alliance with the United States has given Britain security and prosperity for decades. He also pledged to uphold such relationships and ease the tensions around Greenland that have cast doubt on NATO’s future.

He did, however, disagree with Trump’s threats to raise tariffs on Britain and its European allies until the US was permitted to purchase Greenland.

“Historic alliances must endure, and Greenland’s future must be decided by its people and Denmark alone,” he stated. Starmer stated, “Tariffs should not be used against allies in this way. Britain would be pragmatic and not passive, but he was not looking to escalate a tariff war at this time.”

“A tariff war is in nobody’s interests, and we have not got to that stage. And my focus, therefore, is making sure we don’t get to that stage.”

Following his repeated claims that he wanted to annex Denmark’s large Arctic island, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight nations that sent a limited number of military personnel to Greenland last week.

According to Starmer, he warned Trump that those forces were “clearly there to assess and work on risk from the Russians” during their conversation on Sunday. He expressed his hope that there was now “real clarity” regarding it.

Starmer’s claim that Britain will not retaliate against US tariffs is at odds with the European Union’s response, which includes a package of penalties on US imports worth 93 billion euros ($107.7 billion).

According to the prime minister, the threats might send Britain into a “downward spiral” in terms of trade and alliance erosion.

“I do not want to see that happen,” he stated, continuing, “That doesn’t mean that we put to one side our principles and our values. Quite the contrary, we’re very clear about what they are.”

To secure a deal to decrease some tariffs, he became the first leader in May last year. Starmer has created a strong bond with the US president.

During the interview when Starmer was questioned if he thought Trump was genuinely thinking about military raids, he said, “I don’t, actually. I think that this can be resolved and should be resolved through calm discussion.”
