20 January, 2026 12:28

A major fire broke out in the sheds of Karachi’s New Sabzi Mandi on Tuesday, engulfing multiple shops and raising concerns over significant financial losses as dozens of businesses were affected.

Fire brigade and rescue teams promptly reached the scene, and firefighting operations are currently ongoing. Social media footage shows thick black smoke rising high above the market.

Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad took immediate notice of the fire and issued urgent directives to contain the situation, personally overseeing the response efforts. Firefighters, along with Rescue 1122 personnel, worked tirelessly to control the blaze and secure the affected area.

Following the Deputy Mayor’s instructions, measures were implemented to expedite response efforts, and authorities confirmed that the fire is now under control and poses no further threat. Fire brigade and Rescue 1122 teams remain on-site to ensure continued safety.

This incident follows similar fires in the region. Recently, a blaze at a private plaza on Prince Road in Quetta destroyed dozens of shops and affected an electricity transformer, while a fire at Gul Plaza in Karachi on Saturday night claimed multiple lives and left over 80 people missing. More than 1,200 shops in Gul Plaza were reduced to ashes, with several deaths attributed to panic and smoke inhalation.
