Iranian Ambassador Thanks Pakistan for Principled Stand at UN
ISLAMABAD, January 24, 2026: Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghaddam, has expressed gratitude to Pakistan for taking a principled position in support of Iran at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
The Iranian envoy praised Pakistan for vetoing a vote against an anti-Iran resolution at the UNHRC. He described Pakistan’s move as courageous and based on principles rather than political convenience.
“Pakistan’s principled role under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar deserves recognition,” Moghaddam said. He added that Pakistan acted fairly and upheld multilateral values in its decision.
Pakistan’s Bold Move at the UN
The ambassador highlighted that Pakistan not only opposed the resolution but also called for a formal vote to emphasize differences in opinion at the council.
He noted that political efforts to pressure Iran had failed for the third time in a row, reflecting the lack of international consensus against Tehran.
Moghaddam said Pakistan’s actions aligned with broader ideals of justice, human rights, national sovereignty, and integrity in global governance.
Support Based on Principles
The Iranian envoy emphasized that Pakistan’s support came without any external pressure. He said, “Pakistan’s support clearly reflects its belief in justice, human rights, multilateralism, and national sovereignty, and Iran highly values such principled stands.”
Pakistan has not issued an official statement on the matter. Historically, the country has preferred dialogue and engagement over politically motivated resolutions at international forums. Analysts note that Pakistan’s approach avoids politicization and strengthens the credibility of global rights mechanisms.
Tehran Appreciates Islamabad
Moghaddam concluded by stating that Iran will always remember Pakistan’s consistent and principled support.
Experts say Pakistan’s stance is consistent with its broader foreign policy strategy, which focuses on maintaining balanced relations, supporting multilateralism, and staying independent from politically selective measures.
