Karachi Mayor Under Fire as Opposition Plans No-Confidence Motion

31 January, 2026 10:50

KARACHI: In response to the Gul Plaza tragedy, the opposition in the City Council declared on Friday that they would file a motion of no confidence against Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

Speaking to the media at the KMC offices, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Leader of the Opposition in the City Council Advocate Saifuddin stated that the opposition had first hoped that the Sindh government would independently admit the mayor’s failure, but no such action was taken.

He stated, “We wanted the Sindh government to realize that the mayor has failed, but that did not happen.”

“We will have no choice but to bring a no-confidence motion against the mayor if the Sindh government does not remove him,” he said.

Advocate Saifuddin claimed that a number of political parties represented in the City Council had been contacted and promised to support the motion of no confidence against the mayor.

However, the JI still faces significant obstacles in transforming its movement into a powerful political force because the party’s past circumstances have not been promising.

Following the PPP’s partnership with the PML-N and JUI-F, which increased their total strength in the City Council to 173 votes, Barrister Murtaza Wahab was elected mayor of Karachi on June 15, 2023.

Barrister Wahab won because 32 PTI-affiliated members did not cast ballots, despite JI having the support of 61 PTI members.
