New Chapter in Pakistan-Bangladesh Relations After BNP’s Historic Win
Pakistan’s top leadership has congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on its historic victory in Bangladesh’s general elections, expressing hope for stronger ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have improved since the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024 following a Gen Z-led movement. Since then, both countries have restarted sea trade and expanded government-to-government commerce.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s Message
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman on leading his party to a decisive victory.
“I extend my warmest felicitations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a resounding victory in the parliamentary elections,” the prime minister said.
He also praised the people of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the polls and said Pakistan looked forward to working closely with the new leadership.
“We hope to further strengthen our historic and brotherly relations and work together for peace, stability and development in South Asia,” he added.
President Zardari Welcomes Democratic Process
President Asif Ali Zardari also congratulated the BNP leadership and the people of Bangladesh.
He said Pakistan supported democratic partnership and shared progress between the two countries, calling the election outcome a positive step for regional stability.
BNP Returns to Power After Two Decades
The BNP secured a two-thirds majority in the general elections, winning more than 210 seats in the 299-member parliament, according to unofficial results. The Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies emerged as the main opposition with around 70 seats.
The BNP’s return to power comes after months of political uncertainty following Sheikh Hasina’s removal in August 2024. The country had been led by an interim administration under Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
After the results, the BNP thanked voters and urged party workers not to hold victory rallies. Instead, it called for nationwide prayers for the country’s peace and prosperity.
Focus on Stability and Economy
A clear election outcome was widely seen as essential for stability in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of around 175 million people. Political unrest in recent months had disrupted daily life and key industries, including the garment sector, where Bangladesh is one of the world’s largest exporters.
Tarique Rahman, son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, is expected to be sworn in as prime minister. He returned to Dhaka in December after spending nearly 18 years abroad.
