Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, has rejected rumours suggesting that Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, was seeking the party chairmanship.
Speaking to the media, Barrister Gohar said Aleema Khan had never requested him to resign from the party leadership nor expressed any desire to lead PTI.
“She has never interfered in the matter of the party chairmanship,” he added, dismissing circulating speculation in political circles.
The PTI chairman also criticized remarks made by PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat, noting that he had previously obtained a commitment from him to avoid controversial statements.
“This is not the right approach to sit on television and attack any personality,” Barrister Gohar said, adding that sometimes it is better not to respond to certain issues. He urged party members to refrain from making statements that could harm the party’s image.
Barrister Gohar further clarified that PTI held its intra-party elections on March 3, 2024, and the documents were submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan on April 10, 2024. “At that time, we were still waiting for the certificate from the Election Commission, so such discussions had no justification,” he said.
PTI Leadership Rejects ‘Release Force’ Proposal
Senior PTI leaders and the Leader of the Opposition have also turned down a proposal to form a “release force” for Imran Khan. The idea was reportedly suggested by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, but party leadership distanced themselves from the initiative.
Sources confirmed that PTI will continue to pursue the release of its founder through constitutional and legal means rather than forming any special force. Senior party officials have communicated their reservations to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, emphasizing that the majority of PTI’s top leadership does not support the proposal.
The party’s political committee, currently in session, is expected to formally reject the proposal. Officials reiterated that PTI remains committed to legal and constitutional avenues concerning Imran Khan’s detention.
Barrister Gohar urged party leaders to maintain unity and avoid actions or statements that could create internal controversy.
