Karachi Police Release Driver in Fatal DHA Crash That Killed Food Delivery Rider

The driver involved in a tragic accident that claimed the life of a food delivery rider in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area was released by police on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late at night at Khayaban-e-Ittihad near a traffic signal, when a speeding car lost control and struck 32-year-old rider Farhan, a resident of Thatta. Farhan sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed to his wounds.

Initial reports indicated that the suspect fled the scene after briefly pretending to offer assistance, prompting a police search. The driver, identified as Hasan Bhangwar, was later taken into custody, although his detention was not disclosed for nearly 16 hours.

Police stated that the deceased’s family pardoned the accused “for the sake of Allah,” resulting in his release. A copy of the written reconciliation agreement shows that Farhan’s father, Gul Zaman, who works as a driver at Bilawal House, described the incident as accidental and confirmed that the family did not wish to pursue legal action.

According to investigators, Hasan Bhangwar claimed he was driving with a friend when a motorcycle suddenly appeared in the road. Police estimated the car’s speed at the time of the accident to be between 130 and 140 kilometres per hour.

Farhan’s body was transported to Thatta for burial, and authorities said they plan to contact the family again following the funeral.

Despite the family pardon, the release of the suspect without further legal proceedings—despite allegations of overspeeding, signal violation, underage driving without a licence, and initially concealing custody—has sparked public concern over the handling of the case.
