Italy announces over 10,500 work visas for Pakistanis

February 25, 2026 – Rome, Italy – In a major development for Pakistani workers, Italy has announced the issuance of 10,500 work visas for skilled Pakistani professionals under legal migration channels.

The announcement was made by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi during a bilateral meeting with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries on internal security, curbing illegal immigration, and promoting legal migration pathways.

Legal Migration and Bilateral Cooperation

The initiative is designed to strengthen regulated workforce mobility between Italy and Pakistan. Matteo Piantedosi emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation to expand lawful migration and collaboration in other areas of mutual interest.

At Pakistan’s request, Italy also agreed to grant visa exemption to holders of Pakistani diplomatic passports, a step that builds on earlier discussions between both nations.

Tackling Illegal Migration and Security Concerns

Both ministers discussed measures to combat illegal immigration, human trafficking, and narcotics smuggling. Minister Naqvi highlighted Pakistan’s stricter monitoring at airports and maritime borders, which has reportedly reduced illegal departures from the country.

Italian authorities praised Pakistan’s efforts, with Piantedosi commending the Ministry of Interior and Pakistani institutions for their progress in tackling human smuggling and drug trafficking.

Officials Present at the Meeting

The high-level meeting included several top officials, including Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy Ali Javed, FIA Director General Dr. Usman Anwar, Punjab Safe City Authority MD Ahsan Younis, and senior police officers Abid Khan and Sohail Chaudhry.

This step is seen as a significant boost for skilled Pakistani workers seeking employment in Europe and strengthens the Italy-Pakistan partnership in legal migration and security cooperation.
