UN office, govt buildings burned in Skardu as protests erupt after Khamenei’s martyrdom
SKARDU: Protests turned violent in parts of Pakistan after tensions in the Middle East increased. In Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, angry demonstrators set several important buildings on fire during a night of chaos.
The regional office of the United Nations was badly damaged as flames spread through parts of the building. Reports say other places were also targeted, including an Army Public School, the superintendent of police’s office, a software park, and the headquarters of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme. Many of these buildings suffered heavy damage.
Videos shared on social media showed thick black smoke rising into the sky while large crowds gathered in the streets. Officials confirmed that the damage is serious, but a full report is still being prepared.
The protests also spread to Gilgit, where another UN office was reportedly set on fire. Demonstrators were reacting to claims about attacks on Iran and reports about the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Online videos showed buildings burning and people chanting slogans.
The unrest later reached Karachi. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the United States Consulate General Karachi. Some windows were broken, and clashes took place between protesters and security forces. Police and paramilitary personnel used tear gas and batons to control the situation. Officials confirmed that at least six people were killed and several others were injured before calm was restored.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media claimed that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, died after military strikes. If confirmed, his death could have major political effects in Iran and the wider region. Governments around the world are closely watching the situation as tensions remain high.
