PM Shehbaz Chairs High-Level Meeting to Safeguard Pakistan’s Economy Amid Regional Tensions
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to discuss measures aimed at maintaining economic stability in Pakistan amid the evolving regional situation.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on the potential economic impact of recent regional tensions, highlighting that current geopolitical developments could have significant implications for Pakistan’s economy and emphasizing the need for timely and proactive policy measures.
The prime minister stated, “The government is closely monitoring the global situation, and prompt steps are essential to safeguard economic stability in Pakistan.”
He instructed the federal cabinet, elected representatives at both federal and provincial levels, and senior government officials to actively ensure relief for the public and the effective use of national resources.
Shehbaz Sharif also called on ministers and government employees to adopt simplicity and austerity during this challenging period, stressing the importance of prudent resource management. However, he clarified that these austerity measures would not affect the industrial and agricultural sectors, as maintaining domestic production, exports, and food security remains a priority.
“The burden of austerity and savings should be shared fairly across society,” the prime minister added, urging privileged and affluent segments to set an example by accepting necessary adjustments.
Officials also reported that Pakistan currently has sufficient stocks of diesel, petrol, and other petroleum products, and that advance arrangements have been made to address any potential emergency situation. The meeting further emphasized efficient energy management and careful fuel usage.
Several proposals related to austerity and savings were discussed, with officials noting that a formal announcement of the final strategy would be made on Monday.
The prime minister concluded by saying that once the economy stabilizes after this challenging phase, the government will be in a better position to provide greater relief to the people of Pakistan.
