Key Austerity Measures to Conserve Fuel Amid Middle East Crisis
In response to the ongoing Middle East conflict and its impact on global oil supplies, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday unveiled a comprehensive austerity plan aimed at conserving fuel and mitigating the economic fallout in Pakistan. This announcement follows a significant 20% hike in petrol and diesel prices, prompted by disruptions in global oil supply chains due to the conflict.
Addressing the nation, PM Shehbaz highlighted the regional instability, stating that the entire Middle East was in a state of war. He emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and prevent further escalation. “The entire region is currently in a state of war,” the Prime Minister said, reassuring citizens that Pakistan was doing everything possible through diplomatic channels to help resolve the situation.
To help Pakistan weather the crisis, PM Shehbaz introduced a series of key austerity measures, which include:
- 50% cut in fuel allowances for all government departments for the next two months.
- 60% reduction in the number of vehicles used by government departments, keeping them off the roads.
- Salaries for federal cabinet members, advisers, and special assistants will be suspended.
- 25% salary cut for members of parliament to contribute towards fuel savings.
- 20% reduction in expenditures across all government departments.
- A ban on foreign visits by federal and provincial ministers, as well as advisers.
- Two-day salary cut for Grade 20 officers and above.
- Ban on purchasing vehicles and air-conditioning units for government offices.
- Complete ban on official dinners and iftar parties for two months.
- 50% of public and private sector employees will work from home to reduce commuting and fuel consumption.
- Government offices will operate only four days a week, with the exception of banks.
- Schools will be closed for two weeks, starting at the end of this week, to save on energy resources.
These measures are designed to reduce government expenditure, conserve fuel, and curb unnecessary travel while ensuring that essential services continue to operate efficiently. PM Shehbaz emphasized that these decisions, while difficult, are necessary to manage the current global crisis and protect Pakistan’s economy from further strain.
