PM Shehbaz Sharif Addresses Nation on Middle East Conflict and Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts

09 March, 2026 21:13

In a crucial address to the nation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif outlined Pakistan’s response to the escalating Middle East conflict, the economic pressures caused by rising global oil prices, and the government’s new austerity measures. PM Shehbaz emphasized that the region is currently in the grip of severe conflict and reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on resolving international issues through diplomacy.

“We have always advocated solving problems through diplomacy,” said PM Shehbaz, stressing the importance of peaceful solutions in these turbulent times. He condemned recent attacks on Gulf nations and expressed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity, stating, “Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with these nations.” The Prime Minister also acknowledged the growing security challenges on Pakistan’s western border due to terrorism.

In light of the rising global oil prices, which have surged from $60 to $100 per barrel, PM Shehbaz outlined the significant impact this has on Pakistan’s economy, particularly since the country relies heavily on oil and gas imports from the Gulf. “Pakistan has made tough decisions in light of the global situation,” he remarked, highlighting the necessity of economic measures to protect national interests.

The Prime Minister then outlined several austerity measures aimed at reducing government spending. These include a 25% reduction in parliamentarians’ salaries, a ban on foreign travel for governors, and a halt on official dinners and events. He also stated that government seminars and meetings would be held at government venues rather than hotels to cut costs.

Additionally, in an effort to ensure the public’s well-being and maintain educational continuity, PM Shehbaz announced a two-week closure of all schools, with online classes being implemented nationwide. He also mentioned that the government would be reducing staff by 50% in non-essential services and limiting office hours to four days a week.

“We are making these difficult decisions to manage our resources wisely and ensure the safety and stability of our nation,” the Prime Minister concluded, stressing that diplomacy and fiscal discipline are key to navigating the current global challenges.
