PM Shehbaz Sharif Leaves for Saudi Arabia to Discuss Middle East Crisis with MBS
Islamabad, March 12, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for Saudi Arabia on Thursday to hold an important meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The visit focuses on rising tensions in the Middle East following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, United States, and Israel.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is accompanying the prime minister on the trip. During the visit, the Pakistani delegation will discuss regional security, diplomatic efforts, and possible steps to reduce tensions in the region.
Pakistan has increased diplomatic contacts after the recent conflict involving Iran. The crisis escalated after attacks linked to the United States and Israel triggered major instability in the region. Since then, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar have been in contact with leaders from several Gulf countries to help reduce tensions and support peace efforts.
Iran has reportedly launched attacks on several targets, including US military bases and locations in Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Iran has also taken the major step of closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. This move has caused global oil prices to surge, with some analysts warning prices could reach $200 per barrel.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir met Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman to discuss security cooperation. The meeting focused on regional stability and recent Iranian attacks in the Gulf region.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement in September last year. Under this agreement, an attack on one country is considered an attack on both nations. The deal strengthened defence cooperation between the two allies.
Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting two drones that were heading toward the Shaybah Oil Field. According to the Saudi defence ministry, the drones were destroyed before they could reach the facility. Officials believe such attacks aim to disrupt global energy markets.
Pakistan’s leadership hopes the diplomatic visit will help calm the situation and encourage dialogue among regional powers. Officials say stability in the Middle East is important not only for regional peace but also for global energy security.
