First Pakistani Oil Tanker Reaches Home Waters After Crossing Strait of Hormuz

18 March, 2026 09:01

In a major development amid rising regional tensions, Pakistan’s oil tanker MT Karachi has safely reached the country’s maritime zone after successfully passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The vessel, carrying approximately 80 million litres of crude oil, is now moving through the Gulf of Oman and is expected to dock at the Port of Karachi on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

This marks the first Pakistani tanker to transit the crucial waterway after its reported closure due to escalating tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The strait is considered one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes, and any disruption significantly impacts global energy supply chains.

Special Permission from Iran

Officials revealed that Iran granted special permission for the tanker to pass through the strait. The vessel was allowed to use Iranian territorial waters to ensure a safe and uninterrupted journey.

The tanker had originally departed from Das Island on February 28.

Pakistan Navy Ensures Safe Passage

The Pakistan Navy provided maritime security escort to the tanker during its transit through the sensitive corridor, ensuring protection against any potential threats.

Authorities said the successful passage demonstrates Pakistan’s ability to secure critical energy supplies even during geopolitical crises.

Payment Made in Chinese Yuan

In a notable shift, international reports suggest that the payment for the crude oil cargo was made in Chinese yuan, highlighting a growing trend toward alternative currency arrangements in global energy trade.

Analysts say such moves reflect changing dynamics in international markets, especially during times of economic uncertainty and geopolitical conflict.

The safe arrival of MT Karachi is being seen as a positive signal for Pakistan’s energy security, as the country continues to navigate challenges posed by global oil price volatility and regional instability.

Experts warn, however, that continued tensions in the region could still impact future shipments and fuel prices in the coming weeks.
