The Karachi administration has launched a crackdown against transporters who were charging inflated fares to passengers traveling to their hometowns for Eid-ul-Fitr. The operation, carried out by the district administration in coordination with the Provincial Transport Authority, targeted bus operators across the city.
In the latest sweep, 546 buses were inspected, and a total of Rs 718,000 in excess fares was immediately refunded to passengers. The ongoing operation has already led to inspections of 1,442 buses over the past four days, resulting in the recovery and return of Rs 1.746 million in overcharged fares.
Ameet Narwani, Secretary of the Provincial Transport Authority, presented a formal report on the crackdown to Karachi’s Commissioner. Passengers have expressed their appreciation for the actions taken by the provincial government and Karachi administration to prevent overcharging.
The crackdown continues across various bus depots, including locations on the Superhighway, Malir, and District Central, where inter-city and inter-provincial buses operate. In response, the Secretary of Transport has issued directives ensuring that all bus operators strictly adhere to government-notified fare rates for journeys to other cities and provinces.
