Rebel Group Targets Indian Troops in Changlang District

28 March, 2026 17:02

According to reports from Indian media and the Kashmir Media Service (KMS), a team installing security fencing on the Myanmar border came under a heavy attack in the Changlang area. The Assam Rifles border fencing team was specifically targeted near Border Pillar 172 in the Pangsaw Pass region. Local reports indicate that at least four Indian soldiers were killed and several others injured in the ambush, with the injured personnel being immediately evacuated for medical assistance.

The Naga separatist group NSCN-K(YA) has claimed responsibility for the attack, marking another instance in its long history of targeting the Indian Army in this restive region. In the aftermath of the firing, the Indian Army launched a large-scale search and security operation across Changlang district, which has historically been a flashpoint for insurgency and violent clashes between military forces and rebel factions.

This latest incident highlights the intense local opposition to the India-Myanmar border fencing project. Many within the local population view the fence as a direct attempt to eliminate Naga identity, leading to widespread protests. Reports further suggest that Indian forces have been utilizing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to carry out extrajudicial killings, fake encounters, and arbitrary arrests in an effort to suppress local resistance. Historical data reveals that since 2000, Indian security forces have reportedly killed more than 800 people in Nagaland.

Defense experts note that NSCN-K(YA) militias frequently target Indian troops in border areas as part of a retaliatory strategy. Political observers emphasize that the group’s ultimate goal remains complete independence and the establishment of “Nagalim.” This attack follows a pattern of heavy losses for Indian forces, including a major assault on an Assam Rifles camp during India’s Republic Day in January 2026, which left at least six soldiers dead. Military observers suggest that these persistent and sophisticated attacks demonstrate the group’s significant military capabilities and confirm that the NSCN-K(YA) remains a potent and active separatist force.
