Karachi authorities have declared an emergency after rainfall hit the city and surrounding areas due to an approaching westerly wave. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported rainfall across multiple locations, including Quaidabad, Malir, PAF Faisal Base, and Jinnah Terminal. Heavy rain was recorded in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Saddar, Clifton, Garden, and Keamari, while light showers affected Gulshan-i-Maymar and other parts of the city.
Bahria Town received the highest rainfall at 20.5mm, followed by Surjani Town (12.6mm) and University Road (8.2mm). Weather radar imagery indicated isolated hail and heavy downpours over northern Karachi around 10 a.m.
The PMD forecast cloudy skies with intermittent rain and thunderstorms, with maximum temperatures expected between 24–26°C and humidity ranging from 60–83%. Light rain and drizzle are expected on Friday, followed by mostly sunny weather on Saturday with temperatures reaching 30–32°C.
Emergency Response and Citizen Assistance
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi confirmed activation of emergency measures. Teams from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), and town administrations are deployed to drain water from roads and address traffic issues. Citizens can contact the rescue helpline at 1299 for assistance.
Rain emergency help desks have been set up across all districts, including District East, South, Keamari, and Central, with additional dewatering pumps and staff monitoring chokepoints to prevent flooding.
Sindh Government Precautions
The Sindh government urged residents to exercise caution and stay alert. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that essential staff are on duty and advance arrangements are in place. Residents are advised to avoid weak or dilapidated buildings, and the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has established emergency centres in all regional offices until April 8.
Police, emergency services, and local authorities remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies caused by the rainfall.
